It is often said that no good deed goes unpunished. Gregory Fernandez, 43, found that out when he was working on Shamika Fernandez’s car on the evening of August 22.

According to an incident report from the Douglas Police Department, Gregory was doing some work on the front end of Shamika’s car when her ex-husband, Jawari Kyree Fernandez, 38, drove his car across the grass in an attempt to hit Gregory. The report states that Gregory noticed a “vehicle coming right for him.” He moved out of the way and, according to the report, Jawari’s vehicle hit Shamika’s vehicle head on.

After the collision, the report says that Jawari got out of his vehicle and started fighting with Gregory. After a few moments, the fight ended and Jawari went inside of the house. While he was inside, police officers arrived. When an officer asked Jawari why he drove his vehicle into the other one, the report says he just looked at both vehicles and didn’t say anything. The report adds that the officer smelled alcohol on Jawari and he was slurring his words. According to the report, Jawari admitted to the officer that he had been drinking.

Jawari was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of simple battery (family violence), failure to maintain lane, and DUI. He was transported to the Coffee County Jail and remains in custody.
