Apparently, there’s something about the intersection of Ashley Street and Madison Avenue that attracts deer. About a year after a deer crashed through the window of Georgia Skin Company at 122 Ashley Street, another deer wreaked havoc in the same area.
Thursday afternoon, around 2 p.m., a deer jumped into the side of a pickup at the intersection. The deer survived that crash but was hit by another car nearby. The injured animal then ran south into the Central Square parking lot. He sought refuge in the shrubbery on the side of the gym and laid down. Unfortunately, the deer did not survive.
Animal control and code enforcement officers found the deer, a small four-point buck, dead in the bushes.
There are several patches of woods throughout the city that hold fairly large deer populations. Over the last few years, more and more of these deer are finding their way into town, often with disastrous results for both people and the deer.
In the summer, a fawn ran across Ashley Street and ran between Danny’s Pizza and the courthouse. That little deer apparently survived its trip to town; however, it did disrupt traffic as it found its way to safety.
