James Jones, 49, of Atlanta, the suspect whom Coffee County deputies shot multiple times last week as he allegedly ran over another deputy while attempting to buy a cargo trailer fraudulently on November 1, is finally in the Coffee County Jail.

Jones has been a hospital recovering from the deputies’ bullets. He has apparently responded well enough enough from his injuries to be taken to jail. He was booked into the facility Sunday around 8 p.m. His alleged accomplice, Dexter Bowen, 53, also of Atlanta, has been in jail since the incident took place Wednesday afternoon.

A statement from the GBI said that Coffee County deputies observed individuals in the process of making a fraudulent cargo trailer purchase and attempted to make an arrest. The individuals attempted to get away and hit a deputy with their vehicle.  During the incident, deputies shot Jones, who was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center and then to a hospital in Savannah.  Jones is in stable condition. The deputy was also transported to CRMC before being transferred via Air-Evac to Savannah as well. Both were listed in stable condition.

This investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the GBI regional investigative office in Douglas at (912) 389-4103, or the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office at (912) 384-4227. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online athttps://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
