Things are going to get tougher for the Coffee Trojans in the playoffs. But not Friday night.
The Trojans weren’t very gracious hosts to the visiting Chamblee Bulldogs, trouncing the ‘Dawgs 56-0 in the first round of the state playoffs. Running backs Fred Brown and Tyrese Hansley scored two touchdowns apiece and defensive back Isaiah Johnson scored for the second week in a row.
“We’re proud of our whole team. I thought we prepared well all week. We flushed that from last week and put it behind us. We accomplished what we wanted. It’s right back to the process on Sunday,” said head coach Mike Coe following the game.
Coffee was clicking on all cylinders from the opening kick. Less than a minute into the game, the Trojans scored their first touchdown. Big runs by athlete Anthony Paulk and Brown set up a 32-yard touchdown pass from Maurice Hansley to Pat McCall. On Coffee’s next possession, Hansley found James Jarrard for a big gain. That play allowed Brown to find the end zone for the first time of the night on an eight-yard run. Tyrese Hansley rolled into the end zone a few minutes later then, after a Chris Reed interception, Brown rumbled 30 yards for his second score of the game.
The first quarter closed with Coffee up 28-0.
Another Chamblee turnover put points on the board for Coffee. Johnson picked up a Bulldog fumble and ran it in to give the Trojans a 35-0 lead (after Jonah Saylor’s extra point; Saylor was perfect on the night) with 5:52 left in the second quarter.
Chamblee launched some semblance of a drive late in the half and flirted with the red zone. Their drive stalled at the Coffee 24 and they opted for a 41-yard field goal. The kick had the distance but sailed wide left. The Trojans held a 35-0 lead at halftime.
The second half was more of the same. The Coffee defense battered the hapless Bulldog offense. And the Trojan offense kept putting up points.
Tyrese Hansley scored again with 6:01 remaining in the third quarter. Quarterback Trey Ross hit Timothy Burch Jr. for a 17-yard touchdown at the end of the third quarter. Then, with just under nine minutes on the clock in the final period, Ross scored on a 10-yard run.
The 11-0 Trojans move on to face the Jones County Greyhounds in the second round at Jardine Stadium next Friday night. Game details will be released early next week.
