A juvenile suspect wanted in connection with a stolen vehicle allegedly boarded a school bus and attempted to hide among students on the bus, according to a press release from the Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Office.

This morning deputies with the Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Office assisted members of the Irwin County Sheriff’s Office, the Tifton Police Department and the Fitzgerald Police Department in the pursuit and apprehension of a stolen vehicle with three suspects inside.

One of the suspects, a juvenile male, boarded a local school bus in attempt to avoid officers and deputies. The bus driver. after being alerted that the juvenile was not a regular rider, notified the school and authorities. Principal David Sims and Vice Principal John Gamble met the bus upon arrival and immediately took the juvenile off the bus and away from the students. Deputies from Ben Hill County arrived on the scene within moments and took the juvenile into custody.

The suspect was unarmed, and in fact had removed his pants during the bus ride in a  further attempt to conceal his identity. He had shorts on underneath his pants. Officers are continuing to look for the other two suspects.

“As sheriff, I am extremely proud of the efforts of all those involved with special recognition to Principal Sims and Vice Principal Gamble for their willingness to immediately step up and engage in the protection of our students. We are committed to protecting our most valuable resource in our community and stand proud to work with individuals who share the same passion,” stated Sheriff Lee Cone.
