Hawks earn split at 2023 B-Mac’s Christmas Classic

The South Georgia State College Hawks split their two games this past weekend during the annual B-Mac’s Christmas Classic on the Waycross Campus. The Hawks (8-5) rolled 92-55 over Oakleaf Post Graduate Academy Friday night. No. 3 Daytona State took advantage of a strong second half shooting performance Saturday afternoon to defeat SGSC 79-56.

 

 

A total of six SGSC players scored in double figures Friday night, led by Yannis Woods with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Jai Pathmarajah had 14 points, followed by Jo Jo Bell with 13 points and five rebounds. Kyric Davis, Lay Davis, and J’Vonni Roblejo all finished with 10 points, Lay Davis grabbed 10 rebounds.

 

 

The Hawks shot the ball well offensively, making 49.3 percent of their shots while shooting 38.5 percent from behind the three-point line. SGSC was also solid at the free throw line (76.9 percent).

 

 

Defensively, the Hawks grabbed 37 rebounds, forced 30 turnovers, and held Oakleaf to 31.4 percent shooting.

 

 

The No. 3 Daytona State Falcons outscored SGSC 25-7 over the final 10:18 Saturday afternoon to pull away for their 13th consecutive win of the season. The Hawks kept it close until that point, leading 36-35 at halftime and trailing by only five points (54-49) at the midway point of the second half.

 

 

The difference was field goal percentage. The Falcons shot 40.3 percent from the field and held the Hawks to 29.9 percent shooting.

 

 

Kyric Davis and Jo Jo Bell were the only Hawks to finish in double figures against the Falcons. Davis had 23 points and eight rebounds, while Bell had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

 

 

SGSC will enjoy the winter break before returning to Waycross for one final non-conference game Jan. 6 against North Florida Prep. The Hawks begin defense of their GCAA Conference Tournament Championship Jan. 10 at East Georgia State. The Hawks will open their home conference schedule Jan. 13 at 4 p.m. against Central Georgia Tech.

 

 

The SGSC athletic department has announced a change in ticket pricing for home basketball games. All regular season home games are now $7 with children five and under admitted free.
