The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) and Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court programs are looking for youth volunteers for the 2024-2025 school term. Both programs seek to build leadership skills within our youth community.
The DMYC serves as an advisory council to the Mayor and Commission. New members of the youth council will have several sessions which will include: orientation, discussion of city issues, brainstorming for new ideas to engage the youth in our city, participation in retreats, leadership training, and travel experiences. Participants must be students of Coffee County High School or private and home schools located within the city limits. Local principals, school counselors, the Mayor, or Commissioners may nominate students. The DMYC will seat at least nine members who will serve one or more terms. Membership is open to grades 9-12, ages 14-19. Students will be required to attend mandatory orientation and adhere to a planned itinerary. DMYC meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 pm in the Commission Chambers located at City Hall and usually last approximately one hour.
Youth who are interested in volunteering for the Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court are required to be entering the 6th-12th grade, in good academic standing, and live and/or attend school within Douglas-Coffee County. Volunteers must demonstrate an ability to treat each case individually, with objectively and without prejudice. Students should have the ability to communicate clearly, ability to work well with others, and be able to maintain confidentiality of all cases. Students selected into the program will be required to attend mandatory training that will be determined at a later date. All volunteers must attend court sessions, follow the Teen Court guidelines, maintain confidentiality, treat all participants with respect, attend all trainings, and follow court rules. A volunteer must commit to serve at least four months during the school year. Teen Court hearings are held on the first Saturday of the month at City Hall and last approximately two hours.
