Thursday, January 25, 2024, friends, family, and co-workers said goodbye to 911 operator Jake Jewell, 38, of Douglas. Jewell passed away suddenly in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 20, 2024, following a brief illness.

Jake was a friend, confidant, brother, and protector to his co-workers and the officers, EMTs, and firefighters he dispatched. He was much more than a voice on the other end of the phone or radio. He was a comforting presence who safeguarded both first responders and victims from his vantage point behind the microphone. He often dealt with officers when they were at their most stressful moments and citizens when they were hurt, sick, or endangered. Jake’s calm yet matter-of-fact demeanor helped diffuse dangerous and tense situations. He may not have been on the scene but he was much of a participant as anyone who was.

Jake was respected and loved by first responders all over South Georgia. Thursday, his family members saw firsthand the difference he made in the lives of others.

Jake’s funeral took place at First Assembly of God in Douglas at 2 p.m. Fire chief Casey Wright and Rev. Jerry Waldron officiated. Jake’s co-workers faced a dilemma – they wanted to say goodbye to their friend but the county cannot shut down 911 for a funeral. Likewise, the city and county cannot suspend patrols, fire protection, and other emergency services. In order to give Jake’s fellow dispatchers the opportunity to attend his funeral, operators from Tifton, Waycross, and Tri County 911 fielded calls for Coffee County. Also, Douglas police officers and Coffee County deputies dispatched while Coffee County 911 operators paid their final respects.

Jake’s passing has stunned emergency workers throughout the area. Yet in spite of their grief, they have continued to serve the people of Coffee County. Others have pitched in so 911 and other emergency services would not be interrupted.

Jake’s absence leaves a tremendous void at E-911. Yet his co-workers will carry on in spite of his passing. There is little time to grieve or mourn – there is always another call, another emergency, another difficult situation to handle.

Jake wouldn’t have wanted anyone to slow down on his behalf. He would want his fellow operators to continue serving the citizens and law enforcement community in Coffee County. He possessed a true servant’s heart and it’s what he would have done himself.

Coffee County has lost a remarkable protector and guardian. Yet he will live through the service of his fellow operators and officers. He established a legacy of selflessness, honor, and duty – and his co-workers will display those same qualities as they serve this community.

Jake wouldn’t have only wanted that. He would have demanded it. This community is a better place because of Jake Jewell. His life was a blessing and his memory a treasure. He will be missed beyond measure.
