On January 16, 2024, the Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) met at City Hall for its regular meeting.  Jr. Commissioner Dickson Petitfere, Jr. was recognized as the Outstanding Jr. Commissioner.  Wyatt Montgomery was recognized as the Outstanding Community Leader for January. Allison Woodward, a volunteer for the Coffee County Food Bank, was the special speaker for the January meeting.

The Monthly Youth Council Spotlight member for January is Dickson Petitfere, Jr.  He is the son of Renate Williams and Dickson Petitfere. Dickson is a Sophomore at Coffee High School with a 95A+ average in all his classes. He is a football player with the Coffee High School Trojans and a volunteer Ambitious Young Men and Youth Council member. He plans to attend college and pursue a career in Engineering or Technology.

The Youth Council chose Mr. Wyatt Montgomery as the outstanding community member for January.  Wyatt is the business owner of Force Jiu-Jitsu and mentors the young people in his programs. He is a brown belt competitor in Jiu-Jitsu, an ISSA Elite Trainer, and a former Collegiate Wrestler.  His vision is to help his students build a foundation to achieve goals and purpose in life.

The special speaker for January was Mrs. Allison Woodward of the Coffee County Food Bank. The mission of the Coffee County Food Bank is to fight hunger by engaging, educating, and empowering our community. The food bank’s mission is to distribute food to those in need and provide additional resources beyond food. Volunteers help to feed over 800 food-insecure children every weekend and provide food to families in need in Coffee County.

The next Mayor’s Youth Council will be held on February 20, 2024, at 6 pm at City Hall in the Commission Chambers. The public is invited to attend Youth Council meetings.

Volunteers are needed for the 2024-2025 School Year on the Youth Council and Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court. Application deadline is January 31, 2024.  For more details on the Youth Council or Teen Court program, please contact Dinitra Williams, Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council & Teen Court Coordinator, at (912) 331-9398 or call the City Clerk’s office at (912) 389-3405.
