JoAnn Smith Spivey, 91, of Shelby, North Carolina (formerly of Douglas, Georgia), passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024 in Shelby, NC. Mrs. Spivey was born August 17, 1932 in Greenville, South Carolina to the late John Clyde Smith and Francis Kennedy Smith.

She was married to the late Eugene Franklin Spivey, a Church of God minister, and they served churches together as pastors for over thirty years. She had a deep love for God and sharing the word of God throughout the communities where they served. Mrs. Spivey enjoyed craft projects and working with her hands, but her greatest earthly joy came from her family. She loved to travel and spend time with her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Spivey is survived by two children: Joel Dean Spivey and Donna Spivey Sisk; three grandchildren: Dina Spivey Green, Michael Dustin Spivey and Adam Taylor Sisk; and three birth great grand children, Bella, Shepherd and Della.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Eugene Franklin Spivey; parents, John Clyde and Francis Kennedy Smith; in-laws, John Franklin and Hazel Peacock Spivey; two sisters: Maxine Burnett and Molly King; one sister in law Otheda Koonse; and two brothers in law: H. D. and Thurston Spivey.

A funeral service for Mrs. Spivey will be held Thursday, February 1, 2024 at noon at the West Ward Church of God in Douglas, Georgia with Chaplin Basha Zackavich and Bishop Leroy Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in the Douglas City Cemetery next to her husband in the Spivey family plot. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Iris B.Vest SpiritCare Center, in memory of JoAnn Spivey. Donations can be made online at:  SpiritCareCenter.net; or checks can be mailed to the SpiritCare Center, 509 Park Road, Sevierville, TN 37862. Condolences may be left for the family at www.ricketsonfuneralhome.com.

Ricketson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
