A Douglas man remains behind bars after he was arrested on aggravated assault and aggravated battery charges following a domestic dispute during which he allegedly broke his girlfriend’s eye socket.
The call came in around 7:30 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024. According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, an officer responded to a McNeil Drive address where a domestic dispute had been taking place. When the officer arrived, he spoke with the victim, who had visible injuries consistent with a physical altercation of some kind. The victim said that she and her boyfriend, Darius Ellerton, 29, of Douglas, had been arguing and he had “been beating her off and on” for over three hours. The victim also reported that Ellerton had smashed her phone.
The officer found Ellerton asleep in the apartment and woke him up. According to the report, Ellerton said he was sorry for “doing that” to the victim and pointed at his eye. Ellerton was arrested and transported to the Coffee County Jail. At the jail, Ellerton started complaining of medical issues and was then taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center. After a few hours, he was cleared to return to jail, where he remains.
While at the hospital, officers learned that the victim had suffered a broken eye socket as result of the dispute, according to the report.
