The (3) South Georgia State College Hawks punched their ticket to the GCAA semifinals Tuesday night with a 79-71 win over (6) East Georgia State. In addition, four Hawks players received end-of-the-season honors from the GCAA.
Kyric Davis led the Hawks with 23 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Most of Davis’s points (13) came at the free throw line. Amren Hoard had 21 points and five rebounds. Lay Davis finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Devon Rainey was the fourth player to score in double figures with 13 points.
The Hawks shot 44 percent from the field and made 67 percent of their three-pointers. SGSC’s defense held East Georgia State to 37 percent shooting and 27 percent from behind the three-point line.
SGSC advances to the semifinal round, which will be hosted by (1) Albany Tech. The Titans defeated (8) Andrew College 99-75. Other quarterfinal games included (4) South Georgia Tech escaping with a 54-53 win over (5) Central Georgia Tech. (2) Georgia Highlands defeated (7) Gordon State 91-77.
The Hawks will face Georgia Highlands at 5 p.m. Friday in the first semifinal game, followed by a 7 p.m. matchup between Albany Tech and South Georgia Tech. The winners of the semifinal round will play for the GCAA Tournament Championship Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Albany.
The GCAA Tournament Champion receives an automatic berth into the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament to be played March 24-30 in Hutchinson, Kansas.
The GCAA also announced All-Region honors this week. Kyric Davis was named First Team All-Region. Jo Jo Bell and Lay Davis were honorable mention selections. Jordan Moore was named to the GCAA’s All-Defensive Team.
