The Coffee Trojans bounced back from last week’s three-game series with the Greenbrier Wolfpack that saw them drop to two out of three and swept the Statesboro Blue Devils this week to improve to 15-3 on the season.
In game one, the Trojans had no problems dispatching the Blue Devils. Carter McMillan had a big day for Coffee, hitting his first home run, a two-run shot in the sixth, and picking up the win with five innings of work. He gave up three hits, three runs (two earned), two walks and he struck out four. Michael Strickland also had three hits and scored three runs.
The Blue Devils put a little more of a fight in Thursday’s double header but still came up short. Statesboro did manage to tie the game at seven with a six-run fifth inning. However, Coffee came back with three in the sixth and one in the seventh to put the game away. The Blue Devils tried to launch a comeback with a run in the bottom of the seventh but the Trojans were just too tough. Coffee won 11-8.
Connor Stewart and Strickland led the way offensively for Coffee. Stewart had three hits while Strickland had two, one of which was a three-run home run in the sixth inning. They both drove in three. Strickland scored three times and Stewart once. Ben Fussell also scored three runs.
Strickland started and went 4 1/3 innings. The Blue Devils recorded seven hits and scored seven runs (five earned) while he was on the mound. Strickland also struck out four Statesboro hitters. Payton Bryant picked up the win in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
In game two of Thursday’s double header, the Trojans won 12-2 in six innings. Ben Roberts had three hits and drove in two. Cannon Jones had two hits while Roberts and Stewart drove in two. Fussell started and took the win for Coffee, lasting five innings and giving up three hits, one unearned run, and striking out five. Roberts finished things off with one inning of work.
The Trojans are now 15-3 overall and 4-2 in region play. They are off this weekend but return to action next week with a three-game series against the Ware County Gators. Game one is at home Tuesday at 6 p.m.
