Coffee County could be getting a new Dollar General. At this month’s county commission meeting, commissioners heard the first reading of a rezoning request from Terramore Development. The request involves 2.52 acres located at 3853 Highway 441 South, which is a small tract of land across the road from Dixie Fence. Currently zoned Agriculture, the request is to change it to Commercial.

The Planning Commission has approved the request. Monday, the county will conduct the second reading and a public hearing. If approved, a new Dollar General store is slated for the property.

The county approved another rezoning request, this one from Buddy Carver at 1889 Highway 158 West. The 3.89 acre tract was rezoned from Agriculture to Commercial. There was no opposition during the public hearing portion of the meeting. The plans for the property include constructing a metal building in order to move Mr. Rooter to this location.

Commissioners also approved the engineering contracts for street and drainage improvements Grandview Circle, which is located off of Bud Hutcheson Road. The state has approved paving Bud Hutcheson Road and Chaney Road, which would provide a paved road connecting Highway 158 West and Highway 32 West. The county has been waiting to get started on Grandview until the Bud Hutcheson and Chaney projects were approved. Once paving begins on that project, the county will work in Grandview Circle. “We wanted to go ahead and get all the engineering together so we’ll have it ready to bid when we bid that bigger project as well. So it’s not fixing to get paved today but we are starting the process to get the engineering that has to be done,” said county administrator Wesley Vickers. The amount of the engineering contract is $30,212. The county would like to bid these projects late this year.

Other items of business commissioners approved included:

  • Engineering services for work on Otter Circle. An LMIG project, the county has already paid just over $9,000 on this project. The net remaining is $44,760.75.
  • The CDBG submittal resolution and the corresponding professional administration services contract with the Southern Regional Commission.
  • The purchase of two pieces of equipment for the road department – a wheel loader and dump truck. The commission tabled the purchase of three other pieces of equipment.
  • A change order in the amount of $7,834.50 for the Riverbend Estates and River Run Road project. This is a $2.7 million project that is set for completion on July 2 of this year.
  • The county named Wesley Vickers the voting delegate for the Georgia Opioid Settlement Advisory Commission.
