The City of Douglas is excited to participate in the 25th anniversary of Georgia Cities Week, sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA). The event is designed to highlight and appreciate the various services provided by cities across Georgia. The celebration will take place from April 20-27, 2024, and will feature various events. This year’s Georgia Cities Week theme is “Soaring to New Heights.”
“We are immensely proud of our city and the services we offer to our residents and visitors,” said Mayor Tony Paulk. “Cities play a vital role in providing necessary infrastructure and services that facilitate business growth and create a platform for events that bring families and individuals together as a community.”
Georgia Cities Week will kick off on April 20, 2024, with the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce/Visit Douglas-Coffee County Wings and Things Fly-In and Festival at Douglas Municipal Gene Chambers Airport from 9 AM-5 PM. Activities will include an aviation fly-in, a Best Hot Wings Contest, Historic Warbird Aircraft, WWII Re-Enactors, an Antique Car Show, Vendors, Food Trucks, Entertainment, a Kids Area, and more! Public Works/ESG Operations will offer Tire Amnesty Week, held on Monday, April 22 – Friday, April 26, 8:30 am-4:30 pm. Tire Amnesty Week will allow citizens of Douglas to dispose of up to 4 tires per resident at 1011 Shirley Avenue (corner of Shirley and College Park Dr.). Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, is required. No commercial and no farm tires will be accepted. Rubber only – no rims. Citizens must be in line by 4:15 PM. FMI: (912) 389-3450.
Spring Junk Free Week will be held Monday, April 22, through Friday, April 26, between 8:30 am – 4:30 pm at 1011 Shirley Avenue (corner of Shirley and College Park Dr.). For citizens within the city limits of Douglas, fees will be waived during this one week for big household and junk items. This will not apply to tires or hazardous chemicals. City Departments will host a Public Service Career Day with High School students during the week. Students will tour each department, interact with city officials and staff, and learn about each department’s services to the community.
The regular City Commission meeting will be held on Monday, April 22, at 6 PM at City Hall. The meeting will be LIVE on the city’s Facebook page (@Cityofdouglasgagovernment), X (Twitter) (@CityofDouglasGA), or YouTube (CityofDouglasGAGov) for those who cannot attend in person.
On Wednesday, April 26, the Coffee Alliance for Arts will host Munch and Music at Emma Ward Park at noon featuring the CHS Show Choir. Heritage Station Museum will have its monthly History At High Noon on Wednesday, April 24, 2023, at 12noon at 219 W. Ward Street. Special speaker will be Chris Adams.
The City of Douglas, along with Coffee County, the Board of Education, and Action Pact/Head Start-Early Head Start, will hold a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the New Head Start/Early Head Start Facility on Thursday, April 25, at 10 a.m., located at 511 Pine Street. Join us for this groundbreaking ceremony of a facility that will impact Douglas and Coffee County’s early childhood education. This joint City/County/Board of Education/Action Pact project is made possible with grant funding through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
The City of Douglas will hold the Barracks #5 Open House for the public to view renovations of Barracks #5 located at Douglas Municipal Gene Chambers Airport on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 1 PM – 4 PM. The building, Barracks #5, is a part of the historic World War II Army-Air Force Flight Training Air Base and was utilized as housing for the cadets who trained at the Air Base before transferring to other bases to advance their flight training.
Douglas Fire Department is partnering with Chick-fil-A for the Touch-The-Truck Event on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 5 PM to 7 PM. Bring the kids and let them learn about fire safety while climbing in the fire trucks and meeting our DFD Firefighters. Sparky the Fire Pup will be on hand to offer free hugs & ice cream to children. The Douglas Police Department will host a Women’s Firearms Class on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 8 AM to 5 PM, at the DPD Training Center. Women interested in becoming safer and more proficient with firearms should register for this 8-hour instructional class. Participants are required to bring their handguns and 50 rounds of practice ammunition to the class. The class is limited to 15 participants, and pre-registration is required. The Great American Cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, 9 AM – 12Noon. Volunteers should meet at City Hall, and then groups will journey to Groups will journey to E. Sellers St., N. College Ave., W. Peachtree St., and N. Grady Ave. as identified by the KDB Litter Index. Cleanup will take place at 9 AM and last until Noon. Volunteers are needed; this is an excellent opportunity for clubs, organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals to roll up their sleeves and earn community service hours by keeping Douglas beautiful.
