A traffic stop that resulted from a vehicle not stopping completely at a stop sign landed a Douglas woman in jail on illegal drug charges.
On April 9, 2024, at around 4:30 p.m., a drug unit officer was sitting near the four-way stop at McKinnon Road and Sidney Adams Road when he saw a white Chevrolet Colorado roll through the stop sign, according to a sheriff’s office report. The deputy stopped the vehicle and spoke with the occupants. The driver was identified as David Metts; his wife, Michelle Lee Metts, 42, was in the passenger’s seat while their adult children were in the back seat.
During the stop, the officer asked David Metts if he could search the vehicle. According to the report, David said no. By this time, another officer had arrived. A K9 walked around the vehicle and performed an open-air sniff. The dog altered on the passenger side of the truck. The officers then searched the vehicle and found a small amount of marijuana and objects used for smoking marijuana. The officers also discovered that Michelle Metts had an active warrant through the Douglas Police Department.
Michelle Metts was arrested and transported to the Coffee County Jail. On the way to the jail, the report says, she admitted that she had meth “in the leg of her pants.” At the jail, a female officer retrieved the suspected meth from her pants. It tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed 1.43 grams including the packaging. Michelle Metts stated that while she had the meth on her person it did not belong to her. She was booked into the Coffee County Jail and charged with possession of methamphetamine. She has since been released.
