The Coffee Trojans have wrapped up spring practice and have their eyes firmly focused on the 2024 season. But that doesn’t mean that the accolades resulting from a historic 2023 campaign are over.
Last week, the Coffee County School System announced that the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association had named Coffee head coach Mike Coe the state 5A and Region 1-5A Coach of the Year. In 2023, in Coach Coe’s second year at the helm of the Trojans, Coffee posted a perfect 15-0 record and won the first state championship in school history.
On a post to his Facebook page, Coach Coe stated, “Please, let me say this, it is 100 percent a coaching staff award.” Then he thanked all of the assistants on the Coffee staff: Bob Hall, Mike Granato, Jim Ertzberger, Shannon Shook, L’Shaun Smith , Tripp Stripling, Mike Booth, Cole Minshew, Cam Morgan, Rich Vester, Beau Johnson, Alex Brown, Ricky Hutchinson, Kenny Grantham, Keke Dawson, Ben Swafford, Kentice Brockington, Zac Coe, Alex Lehky, Pernell Smith, Brian Wilder, and Kam Collier.
As a head coach, Coe has a 160-29 record and five state titles (four at Madison County, Fla. and one at Coffee). Overall, as an assistant and head coach, he has won seven state titles. Coe is the first Coffee head coach to win 10 games in his first year, the first to go 15-0, and the first to win a state championship. He is also a member of the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
