As the clock struck midnight last night, the community saw one of its most violent weeks come to an end. Beginning in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 16, bullets started flying and they didn’t stop until early Saturday morning. That’s three shootings on three consecutive days. Two people were injured — one of whom was a 14-year-old — but thankfully, none of the incidents were fatal.
The Douglas Police Department released statements about two of the shootings. According to the DPD, at 2:54 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2024, the first shooting took place at 487 Sibbett Avenue. The home at this location had been shot multiple times, according to the statement. There were people inside the house and one man, an adult, was shot in the thigh. He was transported by ambulance to Coffee Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The following day, around 2:28 p.m., officers with the Douglas Police Department responded to Brooks Avenue in reference to another gunshot victim. Upon arrival, they found a 14-year-old juvenile with a leg injury. He was lying on the ground when officers arrived. He was transported by ambulance to Coffee Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Then, early Saturday morning, another shooting was reported at a Juanita Street address. A vehicle was shot multiple times in another drive-by shooting. No one was injured in the third incident.
All of these shootings remain under investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to please contact the Douglas Police Department at 912-384-2222 or by email at jclayton@cityofdouglasga.gov.
