A 22-year-old Douglas woman was jailed and later released after she allegedly assaulted two nurses at Coffee Regional Medical Center last week.
According to an incident report from the Douglas Police Department, a deputy with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office transported Shasmine Sirmans, 22, of Douglas, to CRMC, on May 27, 2024. EMS had been called to Sirmans’s location because she was, as the report said, “having a mental breakdown.” As a result, Sirmans had become aggressive with her family, according to the report. EMS personnel were not comfortable transporting Sirmans and asked a deputy to do so. The deputy took Sirmans to CRMC but left soon after because at that time, she had not been charged with a crime.
At the hospital, staff placed Sirmans in a room. She became aggressive with CRMC staff, the report says, so medical personnel restrained and sedated her. During this time, the report says that Sirmans attacked two nurses, hitting one in the arm and grabbing her by the hair. The report says that Sirmans hit the other nurse in the arm, leaving a bruise.
Sirmans had to remain in CRMC’s care for two hours. After the two-hour period expired, a Douglas police officer returned to the hospital and arrested her. She was charged with two counts of simple battery and transported to the Coffee County Jail. She was later released.
