A 20-year-old Douglas man remains in jail after he was arrested for allegedly breaking into a car at Pizza Hut and taking several items. He was apprehended sitting under a shelter at Deerfield Apartments. The incident took place about 10:30 p.m. on May 28, 2024.
According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, officers responded to an entering an auto call at Pizza Hut. The suspect was described as a male wearing a black coat and blue jeans. The first responding officer worked his way south in search of the suspect, eventually finding him sitting at picnic table under a shelter at Deerfield Apartments. The officer noticed that the man, identified as Kahlil Whitley, 20, was wearing jeans and had what appeared to be a black coat spread across the table. When the officer approached Whitley, he noticed that Whitley was going through a woman’s wallet and coins were spread on the ground. The report states that Whitley admitted to stealing some of the items that he had.
Another officer arrived and the two were able to inventory the items in Kahlil’s possession. The various items totaled about $165. The total does not include gift cards that were in the wallet; their value was not stated in the report. The victim reported that there were four sets of earrings that totaled $120 that were never recovered.
Whitley was arrested and charged with entering an automobile with intent to commit a theft or felony. He remains in the Coffee County Jail.
