After seven years at the helm of the Coffee Trojans’ baseball team, head coach Sy Jones has resigned. He has accepted the same position with the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets. The Thomas County school board approved Jones earlier this week and the TCC baseball program will formally announce him tonight. Jones met with his Coffee players this morning and told them the news.
During Jones’s seven years at Coffee, he posted a 120-88 record. He had his best year this season, a 27-7 campaign that saw the Trojans advance to the second round of the state playoffs. “Today is a bittersweet day for our family. As we make a move common to the coaching profession we do so with the deepest gratitude to some very special people of Coffee County. What started with a phone call from my former Georgia Southern teammate Dr. Chad Fussell about the position of head baseball coach culminated with a meeting with Dr. Roland Cummings and a job offer from Coach Randy Garrett. I felt at home immediately. What ensued over the next seven years on and off Charles A. Wilson Field created memories we will never forget. Thank you to each and every player I was fortunate enough to coach and every class I was blessed to teach. The program was not perfect but that was not the case with the assistant coaches I worked with. They are amazing men and teachers of the game! I am proud to be the husband of a Coffee County Schools Teacher of the Year as well as father of two Coffee graduates. We wish Coffee baseball all the best the game has to offer,” stated Coach Jones Thursday afternoon.
“Coffee athletics would like to thank Coach Jones for his efforts as our baseball coach. He definitely leaves the program in a much better place than he found it when he took the job. We wish Sy and his family the best as his career advances,” said Coffee athletic director Steve Wight.
“I appreciate Coach Jones and his family and the leadership he provided during his tenure as the head baseball coach at Coffee High School. We wish him success as he moves on to this next chapter in his career. I am excited about the future of Coffee baseball and looking forward to the continued success of our Coffee Trojan baseball team,” said Dr. Morris Leis, Coffee school superintendent.
Coach Jones inherits a Yellow Jackets program that finished the 2024 season with a 22-15 record and an appearance in the third round of the 6A state playoffs. TCC eventually lost to Pope on the road. Due to realignment, the Yellow Jackets will move to 5A in 2024-2025 and will be in the same region as Coffee.
