A special city election will be held to fill the vacancy of the Ward 2 commissioner seat. The special election will be held on November 5, 2024. The seat was vacated when, on June 2, 2024, then-commissioner Kentaiwon Durham pleaded guilty to one count of wire transfer fraud in federal court in Brunswick. The guilty plea came as a result of a fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan application Durham filed on March 19, 2021.

Qualifying for the special election shall be held at the Coffee County Elections Office located at 321 S Pearl Avenue in Douglas beginning at 8:30 am on Monday July 22, 2024 and ending at 12 noon on Friday July 26, 2024. The qualifying fee shall be $216.

All persons who are not registered to vote and who desire to register to vote in the special election may register to vote through the close of business on October 7, 2024, or online by 12:00 midnight on October 7, 2024. Early voting will be October 15, 2024 – November 1, 2024. Polls will be open from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm Election Day.

Should a runoff election be required, the runoff will be held on December 3, 2024.
