A 32-year-old Douglas man led county drug officers on a short chase in Douglas that ended on the south end of town. A child was a passenger in the vehicle and suffered a cut on the leg during the chase. The child was transported to Coffee Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The chase began when a Coffee County Sheriff’s Office drug unit detective attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Baker Highway. The suspect, Billy Clarence Toombs Jr., 32, allegedly led officers on a chase that eventually ended at the intersection of Pine Street and South Gaskin Avenue. During the incident, Toombs allegedly discarded suspected illegal drugs.
Toombs was arrested and booked into the jail just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday. He was charged with trafficking methamphetamine, fleeing or attempting to elude police, cruelty to children (1st degree), abandonment of dangerous drugs, as well as a number of traffic offenses.
The car involved in the chase, a white Dodge Charger with Florida plates, was registered to Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. DouglasNow reached out to Hill’s representatives and he released the following statement through them: “Mr. Hill has no affiliation or relationship with the individual that has been alleged to have been operating the vehicle that’s associated with Mr. Hill. Mr. Hill does not know why the individual was allowed to use the vehicle nor does he even know the individual that has been alleged to have been operating the vehicle. Mr. Hill has no connection to this matter.”
