A suspected drunk driver led law enforcement officers on a dangerous and destructive chase Tuesday night that thankfully ended with no injuries but one wrecked patrol car.
Tuesday, July 23, 2024, deputies received a call of a possible drunk driver in Baymeadows. An officer located the driver on Woodrow Stone Road and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver, Cody Dylan Sewell, 33, refused to stop and attempted to flee. He turned left on to Highway 158 and traveled west to St. Illa Church Road, where he turned right and meandered his way to Sink Hole Road. From there, he turned left on Sink Hole Road, crossed Youngie Fussell Road, then turned left on to Highway 149. Sewell went all the way to its end, crossing Highway 158, where he turned around in someone’s yard and then returned to 149. After going about halfway to the 149/Youngie Fussell Road split, a deputy PIT’ed Sewell, bringing the chase to an end.
During the chase, speeds exceeded 100 mph and one deputy crashed into Sewell’s vehicle. The deputy was uninjured but was taken to CRMC as a precaution.
Sewell was arrested and hit with a slew of charges, most of them for alleged traffic violations. The major charges, however, are aggravated assault, fleeing/attempting to elude, DUI, hit and run, and driving with a suspended license. He was transported to the Coffee County Jail where he remains.
