On the sunny, breezy morning of Monday, July 29, 2024, the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Coffee County School System, hosted a joyous groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the construction of the new Coffee County Board of Education building. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in the ongoing development of our local education infrastructure and economic growth.

The ceremony commenced with opening remarks by Chelsea Graham of the Chamber of Commerce, setting a tone of optimism and celebration. She then introduced Dr. Morris Leis, Superintendent of Coffee County Schools, who delivered an inspiring welcome and historical overview. Dr. Leis highlighted the remarkable growth of both the local economy and the school system over the decades, emphasizing that a strong school system is a cornerstone of a thriving community – a value that Coffee County holds dearly.

Pastor Rueben Speight of Greater Destiny International Ministries offered a heartfelt invocation, blessing the new establishment and the vital work that the central office employees will undertake to ensure the continued success and service to the students of Coffee County.

Ben Floyd, Board Chair of the Chamber of Commerce, reflected on the enduring and fruitful partnership between the Chamber and the school system, expressing excitement for the collaborative achievements that lie ahead. Following him, Adam Lott, Chairman of the Coffee County School Board, spoke about the concerted efforts and partnerships with various community entities – including City and County Administrations, the Economic Development Authority, and the Chamber – that culminated in this significant project. He acknowledged the hard work and dedication that facilitated the completion of Douglas Square, necessitating the relocation and reconstruction of the Board of Education office.

Bryan Preston, Vice Chairman of the Coffee County School Board, underscored the importance of ESPLOST tax dollars in funding such essential projects. He extended heartfelt thanks to local voters for their unwavering support, without which this new building and other school construction projects would not be possible.

Keith Barrett of A&B Architects, the mastermind behind the design of the new central office building, was acknowledged for his visionary work. Additionally, local construction company Harper & Company Builders, who won the low bid for the project, has already commenced construction on the new building grounds, heralding a new chapter in Coffee County’s educational journey.

The new Coffee County Board of Education building, located just to the right of the entrance of Coffee High School on Trojan Way, symbolizes a commitment to educational excellence and community collaboration. This groundbreaking ceremony not only celebrated the physical construction of a new building but also the collective efforts and shared vision of a community dedicated to providing the best for its students.
