An investigation that began in April ended on July 30 with the arrest of Shameka Latrella Graham, 42, of Douglas, on illegal drug charges. Graham had allegedly attempted to avoid arrest following the April incident and had been successful for nearly four months. Her luck, however, finally ran out.
According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, on April 3, 2024, an officer responded to the intersection of Spooner Road and Spooner Court in response to a male subject making statements threatening suicide. A second officer arrived and spoke to the male. The first officer noticed a female walking on Spooner Court who was yelling at another person. When she neared the officer, he tried to talk to her. He thought she might be involved with the male subject in some way. The officer noticed she had tears running down her face but she said she was OK and not involved with the male.
The female subject kept walking on Spooner Road. A moment later, the report says that a Jeep Compass stopped nearby at a stop sign. The report says the officer thought the occupants of the car could shed some light on what was going on so he approached the vehicle. The report says that the officer could smell marijuana inside the vehicle. The occupants stated they were trying to catch up to the female, who had just walked away from where they had been. The report adds that the occupants didn’t give clear information on what exactly was happening.
There were two occupants in the vehicle – Zeniya Lowe and Shameka Graham, who was Lowe’s mother. The report says that Graham was intoxicated. They denied smoking marijuana in the car and said there was no marijuana in the vehicle. The officer searched the Jeep and both occupants. According to the report, Lowe had a gun in her jacket that was unloaded. A large knife and a second gun were also in the vehicle, the report says. Lowe did not have illegal drugs on her person, the report states. The officer did find a half-smoked marijuana cigarette on the floor of the car. Graham was also in possession of several different types of pills, according to the report. The officer found the pills in the Jeep. The report says that Graham stated she had a prescription for the pills.
The officer confiscated the pills but held off arresting Graham so she could bring copies of the prescriptions to the police station. The officer also discovered that Lowe had a suspended license. The officer told Graham that if she could not produce prescriptions for the pills she would be arrested and charged. He let both Lowe and Graham go.
Graham did not bring prescriptions to the police station. The officer contacted her and advised her to turn herself in. Graham never complied and on July 30, 2024, she was apprehended during a traffic stop. Graham was charged with one count of Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance and two counts of Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Substance. She was arrested and later released.
