On August 13, 2024, a Douglas woman was arrested, jailed, and later released after a Douglas police officer stopped her for driving a vehicle no license plate. During the investigation at the scene, the suspect racked up an impressive list of charges ranging from no headlight to possession of methamphetamine.
According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, just before 9 p.m. on August 13, an officer stopped a 2008 Buick Lucerne driven by Carol Williams, 39, of Douglas. However, early in the stop, Williams allegedly told the officer that her name was Leigh McQuaig. Things only got more bizarre from there.
The report states that the officer initiated the stop because the vehicle had no tag and it was missing the passenger side headlight. When the officer questioned Williams, she said that she had bought the vehicle three weeks prior and the dealership didn’t give her a drive-out tag. The report also says that there was no paperwork in the vehicle (title, registration, insurance, bill of sale) and Williams could not produce her driver’s license.
That is when Williams allegedly told the officer her name was Leigh McQuaig. At the time, the officer did not know Williams’s true identity. The report says that GCIC and MNI showed no records for a Leigh McQuaig.
The officer informed Williams that there was no registration or insurance on the vehicle. Williams then gave the officer consent to search the vehicle. During the search, the officer found a driver’s license with the name “Carol Williams” on it. The officer also found court papers through Gwinnett County for illegal drug charges, a debit card, and other documents with “Carol Williams” on them, according to the report.
The report then states that Williams told the officer that her name was in fact Leigh McQuaig and Carol Williams was her twin sister. The officer continued questioning Williams and she finally admitted that she had lied because of the registration and lack of insurance, the report says. Williams also had a suspended license.
Williams was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine, no headlight, no tag, no insurance, giving false name and information to police, and knowingly driving a vehicle with no registration. She was booked into the Coffee County Jail and released.
