The South Georgia State College Hawks soccer team fought the Gordon State College Highlanders to a 2-2 draw on the SGSC campus Sunday afternoon. The Hawks scored a goal early in the first half then added a second goal in the second half to take a 2-1 lead. The Highlanders scored their second goal in the second half to tie the game at two. Neither team was able to break the tie as time expired.
The Hawks’ Riley Fisher scored the Hawks’ first goal on a cross over the top that fell perfectly in front of the goal. Fisher’s high school teammate, Bailey Maroney, tallied the assist. Both Fisher and Maroney attended high school at Thomas County Central.
Maroney handled the scoring duties on SGSC’s second goal of the day on a textbook header early in the second half. Sophomore Caitlyn Mulvihill set up Maroney with a well-placed corner kick that Maroney timed perfectly and sent into the back of net past the Gordon State keeper. The Hawks fired 18 total shots on goal against the Highlanders.
SGSC travels to Central Georgia Technical College for another conference match-up Thursday afternoon. The Hawks return home Sunday for an 11 a.m. game against a tough Daytona State team. SGSC currently has an 0-1-1 record on the 2024 season. In preseason scrimmages, the Hawks defeated ABAC and Brewton-Parker, two NAIA schools.
