A 19-year-old Douglas man remains in jail on several charges, including aggravated assault, after he allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend in a vehicle at Eastside Park at around 3:30 a.m. on September 11, 2024. Douglas police officers interviewed the victim at Coffee Regional Medical Center, where she was receiving treatment for injuries she suffered in the alleged incident.

According to an incident report from the Douglas Police Department, the victim reported that the previous night, she and her boyfriend, Ijayous Smith, had broken up. However, he had contacted her and asked her to meet him at Eastside Park to see if they could reconcile. The victim agreed to meet him and, once at the park, she got into his vehicle, the report says.

According to the report, once she entered the car, a green Chevrolet Camaro, he began hitting in the face repeatedly, cutting her between the eyes and causing her nose to bleed. She attempted to get out of the car, the report says, but he grabbed her by the hair, causing her wig to come off. The report also states that during the incident, Smith began choking the victim. She tried to get out of the car again and this time, the report says, Smith shoved her out, resulting in scrapes and bruises to her leg.

The victim fled to a friend’s house who took her to CRMC. Smith worked at a local industry and reported to work at 5 a.m. About 4:30 a.m., several officers went to the industry to locate Smith. They eventually found him and, in the report, he denied the incident ever happened. However, given the victim’s statements and evidence officers found when speaking with Smith, they placed him under arrest and took him to the Coffee County Jail.

Smith was charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, and battery. He has not been released.
