The City of Douglas has released the following Hurricane Helene relief update:
UTILITIES FOR CITY OF DOUGLAS
• ELECTRIC: Transmission to Douglas has been restored. All COD substations are hot and we are continuously rebuilding and activating circuits. At the time of this broadcast about 25% of the city has been restored. Anticipating two weeks to have majority of customers restored
• WATER has been restored to the City of Douglas, Nicholls, Ambrose, and Broxton. We are still under a boil advisory.
SANITATION:
RESIDENTS: Rolloff Dumpster for household trash will be available at all schools starting Tuesday Morning. Due to sanitation trucks not being able to drive the regular routes, we are asking residents to take their trash to the following locations. Ambrose, Broxton, Nicholls, West Green, Satilla, India Creek, High School, All City of Douglas Schools
COMMERCIAL: Limited front end loader trash tomorrow, where routes are possible
Debris removal
For rural areas – National Guard is clearing routes from Nicholls, Westgreen, Ambrose, Broxton, Douglas – SDR will be working the city of Douglas and then moving towards rural areas to meet up with the National Guard. How to pile your trash near the road: Separate piles by categories of timber, construction and demolition, sofas and other furniture (brown goods), appliances (white goods), and leaf and limb.
FOOD
Limited commercial operations, changing by the day as electric comes on.
Community charitable.
Salvation Army will be setup, starting tomorrow afternoon, City Hall Parking Lot and Douglas Housing Authority, Ambrose Elementary School, Nicholls Elementary School, GWC Freshman Campus, Westside Elementary School, Eastside Elementary School
If there are any restaurants or community civic, or churches would like to serve or prepare food to linemen and public safety workers, please call 912-389-0273 or 912-381-1033.
SCHOOL: Taking week by week; after the first week a reassessment will be done. Check the appropriate school webpages for further information.
COMMUNICATIONS
Limited and sporadic, cell towers are functionable, but due to fiber being destruction, circuits are being worked on continuously.
DRIVING
Stay at home at all possible. If driving, please drive below speed, use cautious at intersections, treat non-working lights as four-way-stops, and be courteous.
SHELTER OPERATION:
Shelter operations are ongoing, volunteers are welcome; see Red Cross. Sealed – unopened supplies. If you need shelter it is open to anyone in need.
CITY OPERATIONS
Regular city services are suspended until further service.
