SGSC wins third straight to open new season

Justin McCarter had 26 points and nine rebounds while three other Hawks scored in double figures to give South Georgia State College a 97-60 win Saturday afternoon over the junior varsity team from Reinhardt University.

It was the third straight win for SGSC (3-0), which has outscored its opponents so far this season by an average of 101-53.

Other top scorers for the Hawks included Amren Hoard (18 points and eight rebounds), Grant Raven (12 points and 11 rebounds), and Chandler Thomas (10 points and four rebounds).

The Hawks made 49 percent of their field goals, shot 33 percent from behind the three-point line and made 13-of-18 free throws (72 percent).

SGSC’s defense held Reinhardt to 32.8 percent shooting and forced 28 turnovers, 12 of which were steals. The Hawks also grabbed a total of 40 defensive rebounds.

SGSC will host the 11th annual Applebee’s Okefenokee Classic on the Waycross Campus this weekend. The Hawks will face Denmark Tech Friday night at 8 p.m. and will play St. Petersburg Community College Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. East Georgia State College is the fourth team participating in this year’s event.

The SGSC athletic department has announced a change in ticket pricing for home basketball games. All regular season home games are now $7 with children five and under admitted free.
