The driver of a car involved in a horrific traffic accident on Highway 441 North near the entrance of GreeneTree Lakes subdivision late last year has been booked into the Coffee County Jail on several charges, including homicide by vehicle 1st degree and DUI.
On December 24, 2023, Lawanda Leggett, 45, was driving a Ford car at a high rate of speed in an effort to get her daughter, Jazmine Simpson, 26, who was suffering a severe asthma attack, to Coffee Regional Medical Center. Near the entrance of GreeneTree Lakes, Leggett allegedly attempted to pass a car and struck a white BMW SUV that was traveling in the northbound lane of 441. The BMW was going to turn into GreeneTree Lakes but had not yet reached the turn lane. Leggett had three other children in the vehicle at the time of the crash, all of whom suffered serious injuries. Leggett was also seriously injured in the accident. Simpson survived the initial impact but succumbed to her injuries on December 28. The driver of the BMW was shaken up but uninjured.
Following an investigation by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT), Leggett was booked into the Coffee County Jail at 6 a.m. Tuesday on the following charges: Homicide by vehicle 1st degree, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, overtaking and passing, speeding, and DUI-alcohol. She was given a bond and later released.
