Wheeler Park remains closed due to damage sustained from Hurricane Helene. However, people are still visiting the park and allowing children to play on the equipment. The equipment is not safe and city officials are asking people to stay out of the park until repairs are completed.
Wheeler Park has been closed since September 27, 2024. The caution tape that was around the equipment has been removed by someone not affiliated with the city or recreation department officials. New caution tape will be around the equipment as soon as possible. Please do not remove the tape; it is there for a reason.
There are so many hazards that prevent the safe play of children in the park. Signs are posted that say the park is closed. Please follow the closure and not visit Wheeler Park or allow your children to play on the equipment. Please know workers are in the process of cleaning and repairing; however, it will take several months and officials do not want any child to be harmed while the park is closed.
The city is also not allowing nighttime practices or games on athletic fields due to safety concerns with lighting. New lighting or repair products for the lighting have been ordered.
Please be patient and understanding as officials continue to maneuver through a safe recovery for all parks and recreation facilities.
