Dr. Richard Woods, Georgia Superintendent of Schools, visited Coffee County Schools on December 19, 2024, to honor three schools for their exceptional accomplishments in math and literacy. West Green Elementary, Westside Elementary, and Wiregrass Regional College and Career Academy were recognized for their significant growth and achievement in these critical areas.
“Congratulations to our first-ever Math Leader schools!” said Superintendent Woods. “The skill of numeracy is essential for students’ success both in school and in their future lives. These schools and their educators have worked diligently to implement the new K-12 Mathematics Standards and equip all students for life. I commend them for their remarkable work.”
Superintendent Woods also praised the schools for their commitment to literacy. “These schools are making a significant impact on literacy in our state, and as a result, they are transforming the lives of their students. The ability to read opens doors to lifelong learning, which is why we remain laser-focused on literacy at the Georgia Department of Education and as a state. I am honored to recognize these schools, educators, students, families, and communities for their outstanding work.”
Wiregrass Regional College and Career Academy received the High School Math Achievement award for having 90 percent or more of its high school students score proficient or above in math on the Georgia Milestones.
Westside Elementary earned the 5th Grade Math Gateway Growth award for increasing the percentage of 5th graders scoring proficient or above in math.
West Green Elementary was recognized with the 3rd Grade Literacy Gateway Growth award for increasing the percentage of 3rd grade students reading at or above grade level.
Superintendent Woods compared the schools’ achievements to winning a state championship and encouraged them to display their accomplishments with pride.
