The CCA Patriots went 2-1 in three games this week while the Lady Patriots were a perfect 2-0.
On Tuesday, both teams played Memorial Day School. For the girls, it was a match-up of #5 (CCA) vs. #4 (Memorial Day). The Lady Patriots won 55-50 in overtime. At the end of the third quarter, CCA was down 11 points but a big 20-point fourth quarter tied the game at the end of regulation. The Lady Patriots lost starter Brilyn Waldron to a concussion early in the overtime period. Three girls scored double digits (Arabelle Roberts, Ava Vickers, and Abrah Harris). Roberts led the way with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
The #1-ranked boys had a much easier time in their contest, winning easily 71-47. Blake Bryant turned in a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Gray McLean added 22 points and five rebounds.
Thursday night, the Lady Patriots faced #3-ranked Robert Toombs Christian Academy and had little trouble, winning 56-38. Robert Toombs jumped out to a 20-14 lead in the first quarter. A few second quarter adjustments gave Jayla Shrouder and Bristol Barrs the opportunity they needed to lock down their opponents. After scoring 13 points in the first quarter, Robert Toombs’s leading scorer tallied just four more for the rest of the game. Shrouder and Arlee Vickers, an eighth grader, did a good job of filling in for Brilyn Waldron, who was out as she recovered from the concussion she suffered earlier in the week.
The Robert Toombs boys’ team was ranked #4 in the state and proved to be a worthy opponent. However, the Patriots were able to escape with a 58-49 win. CCA got off to a slow start and was down 10-4 after the first quarter. They bounced back and took a two-point lead into halftime. The Patriots pulled ahead thanks to a big third quarter and cruised to the victory.
Friday night saw a #1 vs. #2 contest when CCA’s men’s team traveled to play First Preparatory Christian Academy (First Prep has no girls’ team). It was a tough game, especially considering the short turnaround time after Thursday’s match-up. The Patriots came up short by a 87-65 margin. They were playing from behind all night long; First Prep led 41-33 at the half and CCA never could make up much ground in the second half.
Both squads have games against Robert Toombs and Memorial Day next week, all on the road.
