In late 2024, sheriff’s deputies identified a rising trend of criminal activity in the Green Acres area, prompting multiple calls regarding prowlers, suspicious individuals, and other unwanted behaviors. Situated in the southernmost region of the county, Green Acres has increasingly become a focal point for concerns related to drug-related offenses and theft. This uptick in incidents not only poses a threat to community safety but also necessitates a strategic and systematic response from local law enforcement agencies. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the sheriff’s office initiated measures aimed at curbing these patterns of criminal behavior in the area.

In response to the escalating concerns, the Criminal Investigative Division of the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office launched a month-long operation beginning January 8, 2025. This proactive initiative involved the execution of multiple warrants and targeted enforcement efforts. Officers successfully apprehended five individuals, each with varying violations, including David Cox – Probation Violation, Melissa Harper – Violation of Child Support order, Jerry Rich – Probation Violation, Michael Brooks – Violation of Child Support Order and Obstruction of Law Enforcement, and Adam Gilbert – Felony Failure to Appear. These operations signify a concerted effort by law enforcement to address the specific needs of the community while ensuring accountability for individuals engaging in illicit activities.

The operation also included the execution of four roadblocks, one of which led to an alleged high-speed pursuit involving Ashton Miller, 34, of Douglas. After refusing to stop at the roadblock, the result was a reckless driving incident that culminated in a single-car accident. Miller allegedly left the scene of the accident, fled on foot and eluded capture. A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest. Miller later surrendered on January 20, 2025, facing charges for felony probation violations, fleeing a police officer, and reckless driving. Sheriff Fred Cole emphasized the importance of community engagement in law enforcement efforts, stating that when citizens report criminal activity, it becomes the responsibility of the Sheriff’s Office to act decisively. The CCSO remains committed to maintaining a visible presence in Green Acres and other peripheral areas of the county to enhance public safety and community trust.
