On Saturday, February 8, 2025, officers responded to what was initially reported as a welfare check at a residence on Bethel Road. Upon arrival, they encountered an elderly woman who was crying out in agony. Family members from Cleveland, Tenn., who were visiting for a funeral, had become concerned about their loved one, who had been placed under the care of Shiquil Paulk, 31, of Douglas. Unable to gain access to the home, they contacted authorities, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Given the circumstances, officers made the difficult decision to breach the residence, leading to the discovery of a profoundly troubling situation.
The victim, a 65-year-old double amputee, had been left unattended for an extended period, resulting in her dire state. Authorities found that she was suffering from multiple bed sores, severe dehydration, and dysarthria, indicating significant neglect. The condition of the victim raised serious concerns about her care and safety, prompting further investigation into the circumstances surrounding her living situation. EMS transported the victim to Coffee Regional Medical Center for treatment and CCSO deputies took Paulk into custody citing a violation Georgia Code ยง 16-5-101, neglect of an elder person.
Sheriff Fred T. Cole stated “Our senior citizens are the foundation of our community. We have a duty to safeguard them and ensure that those responsible for their care meet the highest standards. Anyone who fails in that responsibility will be held accountable.”
The penalty for the neglect of a disabled adult, elder person, or resident, is a felony a person found guilty by a jury could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years and a fine of up to $50,000. The offender could also face both a fine and prison time.
