The Coffee Trojans dropped to 2-3 on the young season Tuesday after a 7-5 loss to the Glyn Academy Red Terrors in Brunswick. Freshman second baseman Jimmy Timothy continued to swing a hot bat; he paced the Trojans offensively with 3-4, two-RBI performance at the plate. He also scored three runs.
The Red Terrors took an early lead when they scored one run in the first. The Trojans tied things up in the top of the third then Glynn went up 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the frame. The Red Terrors pulled ahead 4-1 with a two-run fourth.
Then the Coffee offense showed a little life. Will Walker led off the top of the fifth with a double to right. Ben Fussell with a single that moved Walker to third. The left-handed Timothy singled to right and scored Walker and Fussell in the process. Timothy advanced to second on the throw. Michael Strickland followed with a single of his own to drive in Timothy and tie the game at four. That’s all the Trojans would get and they headed into the bottom of the fifth tied.
Unfortunately, the game wouldn’t stay that way for long. The Red Terrors put up three in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-4 lead. The Trojans attempted to mount another run at Glynn Academy in the top of the seventh but their rally fell short. Timothy singled with one out then advanced to second on the throw. Strickland walked then a wild pitch with Connor Stewart at the plate moved Timothy to third. Strickland, however, had to stay put at first. Stewart lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Timothy. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Glynn Academy held a 7-5 advantage. The Trojans couldn’t muster any more runs and the Red Terrors handed Coffee its third defeat of the season.
Besides Timothy, the only other Trojan with multiple hits was Fussell, who went 2-4 with a run scored. Strickland had a hit and an RBI. Stewart also drove in a run. Gavin McElroy and Weston Brown each threw three innings. McElroy gave up four runs (all earned) on six hits. He struck out seven and walked one. Brown struck out three and walked two. He surrendered three runs (all unearned) on three hits.
The Trojans take the field Friday afternoon in a rematch against Toombs County in Lyons. First pitch is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
