After winning six games in a row, the South Georgia State College softball Hawks dropped a double-header to the Tallahassee State College Eagles Wednesday in Douglas 4-3 (game one) and 14-6 (game two, five innings).
The Hawks held a 2-1 lead going into the sixth inning of game one. The Eagles spoiled the lead by putting up two runs in the top of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. SGSC answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at three. TSC plated a run in the seventh to go up 4-3. The Hawks weren’t able to score in the bottom of the seventh and the Eagles won by a run.
Katelyn Newman, Madisyn Schrad, Makayla Edwards, Zoie Irby, Lauren Slaughter, and Savannah Gaumont each had a hit for SGSC. Newman threw 6 1/3 innings and took the loss for the Hawks. She is now 4-3 on the season. Jessica Joiner threw an inning in relief.
Game two started out pretty well for the Hawks – for two innings, at least. SGSC held on to a 3-2 lead after two. Then the Eagles broke the game open with four in the third and eight in the fourth to go up 14-3. SGSC managed to plate three in the bottom of the fourth but that’s all the Hawks would get. The Eagles won via run rule after five.
Schrad, Edwards, and Newman each had two RBI. Joiner scored twice. Schrad and Zoie Irby doubled as well.
The Hawks used three pitchers in the game – Emilee Garrett, Joiner, and Savannah Gaumont. Garrett, the starter, was the pitcher of record. She took the loss with 3 1/3 innings of work. She gave up nine runs (five earned) on eight hits. Garrett is now 3-3 on the season.
The Hawks close out February tomorrow with a double-header against USC-Union at home. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
