Hurricane Helene brought unprecedented damage to Coffee County. Besides the obvious visible damage done to homes and property, people are realizing there are more issues than what they may have originally thought.
With so much damage, it is likely that property could suffer a loss in value due to the storm. To assist property owners with reporting damage that may have a negative effect on their values, the Coffee County Tax Assessor’s Office has a module on the qPublic website specifically so people can report property damage before property assessments go out.
If individuals will go to www.coffeecounty-ga.gov, they can follow the links to the page under the Assessor’s page to Search Records. It will take them to a qPublic.net page. At the top of the page will be a module to search. People should search for their property. Once people pull up their property, they can click on the Real Property Reporting Form at the top of the page. It will then populate information for most of the boxes. Once they complete and submit the form it will be sent to the tax assessor’s office for review. The module has not been up very long; however, the deadline for filing is April 1.
“We felt it was necessary to aid the taxpayers that have damage to their property from Hurricane Helene. We also have an appeal module that will be rolled out as soon as we mail assessment notices sometime around June or July. Hopefully filing a tax return will reduce the amount of appeals,” says Monty Vickers, chief appraiser with the tax assessor’s office.
Anyone who utilizes the site should keep in mind that only major damage that affects value should be reported, such as loss of buildings and major damage to structures, etc.
