A mother and her boyfriend who are charged in connection with the death of a four-year-old girl in Lyons made their first court appearance Monday after being arrested over the weekend.

According to a press release issued by Toombs County Sheriff Jordan Kight, Seth Hunter Brown, 26, and Taylor Marie Hughes, 29, appeared before Superior Court Judge Robert Reeves in connection to the death of Hughes’s daughter, Reese Hughes.

Judge Reeves read the charges of cruelty to children in the 1st degree, aggravated battery, felony murder, and malice murder to both Brown and Hughes. They appeared before Judge Reeves separately. No bond was set but a bond hearing can be requested once Brown and Hughes have been assigned attorneys. District Attorney Tripp Fitzner will be the lead prosecutor in the case.

Brown and Hughes remain in the Toombs County Detention Center.

“I would like to thank my deputies and investigators, the GBI, and District Attorney Tripp Fitzner and staff for their hard work and dedication to this investigation. Everyone has worked tirelessly since the beginning of this case on the evening of March 14, 2025. I ask that you continue to keep the family in your thoughts and prayers along with our team of law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office as the investigation continues,” stated Sheriff Kight.

If you have any information concerning this investigation, please contact the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office at (912) 526-9292.
