Last week, the South Georgia State College Hawks took a brief hiatus from conference play – it was Spring Break, after all – and played a pair of doubleheaders against non-conference opponents. The Hawks had little trouble dispatching their opponents and went 4-0 over those two dates.
On Tuesday, March 18, the Hawks faced USC-Salkehatchie. SGSC won game one 11-3 and then took game two 6-3. Jesse Brown and Payton Bryant were both 1-2 with a home run and two runs scored in game one. Starter Luke Smith went three innings and earned the win.
In game two, Brown and Bryant continued what they started in the first contest. Brown had two hits and Bryant had one hit – a double, the only extra-base hit for the Hawks – and he scored three runs. Logan Taylor, who started and also lasted three innings, took the win for SGSC.
The next day, the Thomas University JV squad came to Douglas for another doubleheader. The Hawks won game one 11-0 in five innings then completed the sweep with a 12-3 victory in game two.
Brown continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Luke Flading also had two hits and three RBI. Chris Gant, the winning pitcher for the Hawks, allowed no runs on three hits.
In game two, Luke Boone and Alex Bairan each had three hits. Boone drove in five while Jaden Camp scored three times. SGSC used five pitchers in the contest; Hadyen Gmerek, the third pitcher of the day, earned the win. He threw two innings and didn’t allow a run.
The Hawks return to conference play today with a trip to Swainsboro to face East Georgia. Thursday, they are at home for a 3 p.m. tilt against East Georgia again.
