It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joey R. Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us to be with our Lord and Savior on April 2, 2025. Born on April 21, 1943, in Lincoln County, NC to Mr. Thomas Ennis Smith and Helen Estelle Nantz Smith, Joey lived a life full of love, dedication, and resilience.
Joey was the cherished husband of Toby Smith, who stood by his side through all of life’s adventures. Together, they built a family grounded in love and support. Joey was the proud father of three wonderful sons: Brian, Jason, and Joey Smith. His legacy lives on through them as they carry forward his values and spirit.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Toby Smith; sons Brian (Gretchen) Smith of Birmingham, AL, Jason (Kim) Smith of Cornelia, GA, and Joey (Christy) Smith, Jr.; grandchildren Ashton (Trevor) Wylie, Mason Smith, Rachel Smith, Ava Smith, Andrew Smith, Thomas Smith, and James Smith. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Ennis Smith, Mother, Helen Smith, one brother Gerald Smith, and one sister Patricia Miller.
Throughout his life, Joey touched many hearts with his kindness and generosity. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever remain in our hearts, a testament to a life well-lived. His leadership and loving nature were demonstrated in his work, his family life, and his friendships.
He was a great example of what a father and husband should be, showing his sons the true meaning of love through a long and loving marriage of 62 years. He demonstrated what it means to be a loving father and “Papa.” Everyone that knew him enjoyed his quick wit and cheerful teasing. He had a unique way of bringing out the best in all of us.
Joey was a member of First Baptist Church of Douglas, GA and saved by the grace of God.
