The South Georgia State College Hawks posted a 2-1 mark over the weekend, defeating the Gordon State Highlanders in Barnesville 14-6 on Friday then splitting a doubleheader with the East Georgia Bobcats at home. SGSC won game one 6-0 then fell in game two 6-2.
Friday, the Hawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Highlanders got on the board. SGSC added four in the seventh and four more in the eighth. Gordon State managed five in the fifth and one in the ninth.
Jesse Brown led the way for the Hawks with a 4-5 day. He drove in two and scored one. Tanner Langley, CJ Chalk, Jayden Nesmith, Payton Bryant, and Brown all doubled.
Starter Kason Degrande earned the win in a 4 2/3 innings outing. He gave up five runs (all earned) on five hits. He struck out two and walked five.
Saturday, the Hawks returned home to face East Georgia. In game one, SGSC scored three in the third and three in the sixth for the 6-0 win. Starter Luke Smith went the distance with a three-hit, 84-pitch shutout. He struck out six and walked one.
CJ Chalk was 1-3 with three RBI. Luke Boone was the only Hawk with multiple hits – he went 2-3 with a triple, one run scored, and an RBI.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Pedro Rodriguez and Gavin Brinkley scored the Hawks’ runs, both of which came in the second inning.
Logan Taylor, who started and went 4 2/3 innings, took the loss. He was one of four SGSC pitchers on the day. He gave up four runs (all earned) on six hits. He struck out one and walked six.
The Hawks are 24-27 overall and 10-15 in conference play with three more games remaining. They have a doubleheader tomorrow at Georgia Highlands. They finish the regular season at home against Andrew College Thursday at 5 p.m.
