The City of Douglas participated in the 26th year of the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Georgia Cities Week. Events throughout the week offered a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our community and the services the city provides to citizens.
ESG/Inframark, the City of Douglas, and Keep Douglas Beautiful teamed up to create the opportunity for our community to beautify their surroundings! With Spring Junk Free Week and Tire Amnesty Week, residents had the chance to clean up around their properties, leading up to the Greatest American Cleanup. Approximately 1 ton of large brown and white goods and 30-40 tires were disposed of during this initiative. Volunteers for the Greatest American Cleanup worked tirelessly, collecting over 50 bags filled with litter from Ward 1. What a fantastic effort to enhance our environment and make Douglas even more beautiful!
The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council met on Monday, April 21 to recognize two outstanding members of our community (Ian Sansot and Karen Batten) celebrate their contributions and dedication. The council also heard a presentation from the city’s Animal Control Officer and the Coffee County Animal Shelter, highlighting their important work in educating citizens about safeguarding domesticated animals.
On Wednesday, April 23rd, several activities took place that included student tours of city departments, engaging history lessons, wonderful music, and a state meeting. Students had the chance to have one-on-one conversations with the Mayor, City Clerk, and representatives from the Fire Department, Police Department, and Animal Control, who provided valuable insights into their roles in city operations. A large group gathered at the Heritage Station Museum for “History At High Noon,” where they learned about Williams Institutional Foods, a long-standing local business in Douglas. The “Munch and Music” event, sponsored by the Coffee Alliance for the Arts and Chick-fil-A, showcased the musical talents of Terry Bailey and Blair Bridwell. Additionally, the Georgia Airport Association held its board meeting at Douglas Municipal Gene Chambers Airport. Hosting these board members in our community gave Douglas officials an excellent opportunity to showcase our airport and the local community.
The Douglas Police Department and Elliano’s hosted “Coffee With a Cop” on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Elliano’s, located at 1351 Bowens Mill Rd. During this event, Douglas police officers interacted with community members and shared information about their new initiatives and programs. Additionally, the Douglas Fire Department partnered with Chick-fil-A for the Touch-A-Truck event. This event provided parents and children with the opportunity to learn about fire safety while climbing into fire trucks and meeting our Douglas Fire Department firefighters.
Douglas has participated in GMA’s Georgia Cities Week since it began in 1999 and looks forward to many more years of celebrating all the wonderful aspects of our city during this week each year. For more information about Georgia Cities Week, check out GMA’s website at gacities.com.
