What started as a local newsletter in 1990 has grown into one of the most respected publications in the world of barbecue. Douglas’ own Barbecue News Magazine just wrapped up its 15th annual Sauces of Honor competition, drawing an incredible 741 entries from 41 U.S. states, Canada, and the United Kingdom—making this year’s contest the most diverse and far-reaching in its history.

Founded by Joe Phelps and Dr. Donald “Doc” Gillis, the magazine was created to celebrate and connect barbecue lovers across the country. Now celebrating 35 years of continuous publication, Barbecue News Magazine remains a trusted voice for backyard cooks, competitive pitmasters, and BBQ businesses alike. Today, it continues to thrive under the leadership of Kell and Janet Phelps, the son and daughter-in-law of founder Joe Phelps.

The Sauces of Honor contest evaluates sauces in four protein categories—beef, pork, chicken, and seafood—plus an overall category to crown the best of the best. Judging is conducted in a blind taste-test format with a panel of certified experts and passionate enthusiasts, ensuring each sauce is evaluated solely on flavor, balance, and how well it complements the meat it’s intended for.

“This contest is a celebration of global flavor and the passion that goes into every bottle of barbecue sauce,” said Kell Phelps, Publisher of Barbecue News Magazine. “We’re proud that a small-town Georgia publication is helping shine a spotlight on artisans from across the U.S. and beyond.”

In addition to running Barbecue News Magazine, Kell and Janet Phelps are also Managing Partners of the National Barbecue & Grilling Association (NBBQA). Founded in 1991, the NBBQA is a membership-based organization that brings together professionals and enthusiasts from every segment of the BBQ and grilling world—including caterers, product makers, restaurateurs, influencers, educators, and backyard cooks. Through educational events, networking opportunities, and industry support, the NBBQA helps fuel the growth and success of barbecue businesses and community members across North America.

As both a publication and an industry leader, Barbecue News Magazine continues to play a major role in preserving barbecue’s rich traditions while helping to shape its future. And it’s all happening right here in Douglas, Georgia.
