The national non-profit School Nutrition Association (SNA) has named Javontae Johnson, Café Assistant for Coffee High School, Georgia, the national Employee of the Year. The award recognizes the valuable contribution of school nutrition employees who exhibit a remarkable commitment to both their school meal program and the students they serve.

Javontae (JJ) Johnson’s ability to inspire others and set a standard for excellence makes him an invaluable asset to the team. His outstanding customer service skills and welcoming, engaging personality have contributed to a 30 percent increase in student breakfast participation compared to the previous year. Johnson plays a key role in fostering school spirit by actively promoting and participating in special events, such as themed meal days, spirit week activities and schoolwide celebrations. His enthusiasm is contagious, motivating students and staff to engage, which in turn boosts participation in school meal programs.

Johnson is vital to the district’s summer meal service program at their central facility, where parents and children gather to pick up meals. He supported the success of the program while strengthening relationships within the community he serves. He is also a strong advocate for inclusivity, which further illustrates his dedication to personal growth, teamwork and success. As an autistic individual, he brings a unique perspective and an unmatched dedication to his craft and works to foster a supportive and uplifting environment for both students and coworkers. His insights contributed to creating training that supports individuals with autism in the workplace, equipping staff with tools and strategies to replicate successful practices.

“JJ goes above and beyond his daily responsibilities, prioritizing the well-being of students and ensuring that nutritious meals are prepared and served with care,” said Shannon Gleave, RDN, SNS, School Nutrition Association President. “His proactive approach and attention to detail shine a light on his dedication to maintaining high standards, fostering student health and promoting the success of the program.”

Professional growth and development are important to Johnson. He earned his SNA Certificate and actively participates in training, including the School Nutrition Professional Enrichment Program, gaining valuable skills in meal preparation, food safety during emergency situations and student engagement. He consistently demonstrates a willingness to embrace new training opportunities and an eagerness to assist his colleagues.

The Employee of the Year Award was created to recognize outstanding school nutrition employees who influence the quality of school meals through customer service, an interest in young people, cooperation, work attendance, creativity, participation in professional development and their willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty.

Johnson was announced as the national Employee of the Year during an online awards ceremony on April 30 in advance of School Lunch Hero Day, celebrated on May 2, 2025, to honor all of America’s dedicated school nutrition professionals. The accomplishments of Johnson and all SNA regional award winners will be profiled on Facebook.com/TrayTalk and TrayTalk.org around School Lunch Hero Day. SNA award winners will also be highlighted in SN Magazine, on schoolnutrition.org and related social media platforms. As a national award winner, Johnson will receive an all-expense paid trip to be recognized at SNA’s Annual National Conference in San Antonio in July.
