Welfare check leads to arrest of wanted sex offender on multiple charges

On May 17, 2025, officers from the City of Douglas Police Department and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic welfare check near Franklin Street that resulted in the arrest of Dontavius Montrell Daniel, 29, of Douglas.

Law enforcement was dispatched at approximately 1:27 p.m. after receiving a report that Daniel was attempting to forcibly remove a woman from a residence. The caller informed authorities that Daniel had a known history of abusive behavior and was believed to be wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed through the Georgia Crime Information Center that Daniel had an active warrant issued by the Terrell County Sheriff’s Office. When officers attempted to place him under arrest, Daniel fled the scene on foot, prompting a pursuit across several properties. Officers deployed tasers in an effort to subdue him, but he continued to resist arrest. Daniel was ultimately found hiding underneath a residence on Peachtree Street and taken into custody without further incident.

Daniel now faces several misdemeanor charges under Georgia law, including giving false information to a law enforcement officer, willful obstruction of law enforcement officers, and criminal trespass. These charges are in addition to the outstanding warrant from Terrell County. Daniel was then transported to the Coffee County Jail.

Further investigation by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Unit revealed that Daniel had been residing at a location on West Franklin Street in Douglas since January 2025, the proximity of the residence was less than the required distance from a church, in violation of Georgia law, which prohibits registered sex offenders from residing within 1,000 feet of protected areas, including churches and schools. This restriction stems from Daniel’s original conviction as a sex offender on October 11, 2013.

Authorities also discovered that Daniel failed to register both his current residence and his place of employment on Peterson Avenue in Douglas, as required by state law. As a result, Daniel is now facing multiple felony charges: residing within 1,000 feet of a church as a registered sex offender, failure to register as a sex offender, and providing false information or failing to comply with the requirements of the sex offender registry.

The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office has secured warrants in connection with these felony offenses. Daniel remains in custody.
