Coffee pitcher Maggie Brown no-hit the Glynn Academy Red Terrors Friday afternoon in Brunswick. The Lady Trojans won 2-0 with Jocelyn Fender and Karlee Thomas scoring both of Coffee’s runs. Saturday, the Lady Trojans kept the momentum going with a 9-8 win at home against the Pierce County Bears.
On Friday, Coffee scored in the first when Fender led off the game with a walk and Thomas followed with an RBI double. In the fifth, Thomas singled with one out then stole second. Ella Winters singled to score Thomas.
Brown threw 100 pitches, striking out 10 and walking three.
Saturday was little tougher. Pierce and Coffee traded runs throughout the game. The Bears made a little noise in the seventh but eventually came up short.
The Lady Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the first. The Bears came back with a four-run top of the third. Coffee answered with two more in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run on a 3-2 pitch by RiRi Paulk to tie the game at four. Pierce took a 6-4 lead in the top of the fourth then Coffee pulled ahead 7-6 with three in the bottom of the frame.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Trojans added two more when Allie Pridgen doubled, scoring Edge. A couple of batters later with Hannah Carlon on third and Pridgen on second, Coffee’s final run of the game crossed the plate when Carlon came home with Kia Wilson at the plate. The two-run sixth put the Lady Trojans ahead 9-6.
The Bears weren’t done, though. With two outs and Harper Larson on first following a Carley Sloan walk, Kaylee Figueroa homered to left to get Pierce within one. However, reliever Kanlee Douglas settled down after the homer and retired the next Bear to end the game.
Fender, Douglas, Pridgen, and Channah Smith each had two hits. Fender scored twice. Douglas, Pridgen, and Paulk drove in two apiece.
Thomas and Douglas stepped into the circle for the Lady Trojans. Thomas picked up the win with a four-inning outing. She gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Douglas picked up the save with a stat line of twos – she gave up two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking two.
The Lady Trojans are 4-1 on the season and open the region schedule Tuesday on the road against Veterans. Thursday, Veterans comes to Faircloth Field for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
