The Coffee Trojans picked up a much-needed win Friday night, ending a two-game skid by defeating the Gadsden County (Havana, Fla.) Jaguars 23-12 at Jardine Stadium.
The Trojans scored 20 of their 23 points in the first half. The Jaguars took an early 6-0 lead when they scored on a 64-yard run on the first play of the game. Gadsden was unable to convert following the touchdown, leaving the score at 6-0.
Coffee answered late in the first quarter when KJ Debruce scored from the one-yard line. A successful point-after gave the Trojans a 7-6 lead. They wouldn’t trail again the rest of the game. About midway through the second quarter, Coffee got on the board again on a 90-yard pick-six by Quan Jefferson. This time, the Trojans’ extra point attempt was no good. Coffee held a 13-6 lead with 6:37 left in the first half. Debruce scored again with 1:46 remaining in the second quarter to give the Trojans a 20-6 lead at halftime.
The second half saw a total of nine points scored by both teams. Late in the third quarter, the Jaguars scored their second touchdown of the night. They went for two and did not convert. In the fourth quarter, the Trojans had a chance to get into the end zone. They were at the goal line when a series of mishaps backed them up to around the 15. Ultimately, Chris Hernandez trotted out for a field goal. His kick was true and Coffee went up 23-12. with 7:33 left in the game. Neither team scored for the remainder of the contest.
The Trojans are now 2-2 on the season. Next week, the Mainland (Daytona Beach, Fla.) Buccaneers come to Jardine Stadium for Homecoming. Mainland lost 20-14 to Spruce Creek (Port Orange, Fla.) on Friday night. The region schedule begins on September 26 with a trip up I-75 to face Northside-Warner Robins.
